The Government of Ghana has escalated its diplomatic engagement with South Africa following the killing of a Ghanaian national, formally demanding immediate justice and calling on the African Union Commission to intervene.
The incident has reignited long standing tensions between the two West and Southern African nations regarding the safety of expatriate communities and the broader issue of migration management on the continent.
According to an official press statement released by Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, 40 year old Bashiru Isak was fatally shot in Cape Town. The Ghanaian government stated that the incident occurred in the wake of anti immigrant demonstrations organized by local movements demanding the immediate removal of undocumented African migrants from commercial and residential areas.
In response to the fatal shooting, the Ghana High Commission lodged a formal protest note with South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation and simultaneously filed a criminal complaint with the South African Police Service. Ghanaian diplomatic representatives are demanding a transparent, thorough, and expedited investigation to ensure that the perpetrators are identified and face the full force of the law.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlighted that Ghana maintains an active petition before the African Union Commission concerning the recurrent challenges facing African nationals residing in South Africa. Accra expressed firm expectations that the continental body will address these targeted attacks with high urgency during its upcoming statutory meetings, emphasizing that intra African solidarity must be preserved through the protection of all citizens across borders.
However, the South African government has contested the contextual framing of the death, urging international observers to wait for formal police findings. The Inter Ministerial Committee on Migration released a counter statement clarifying that law enforcement records indicate the victim was attacked at his place of work in the Nyanga township a day prior to the breakout of the widespread demonstrations.
South African authorities stated that unknown armed suspects entered a local barbershop and demanded money before opening fire, signaling an extortion related criminal act linked to local syndicate activity rather than a xenophobic protest fatality.
While South African officials extended their deepest condolences to the bereaved family and promised a full investigation into the homicide, they cautioned foreign governments and media outlets against the spread of unverified information that could inflame regional passions or incite retaliatory sentiments.
Meanwhile, Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs is coordinating closely with the family of the deceased to facilitate the repatriation of his remains to Accra. Concurrently, the state has issued a travel advisory and security directive urging all remaining Ghanaian citizens currently living in or visiting South Africa to maintain extreme vigilance, monitor local news broadcasts regularly, and strictly avoid high risk neighborhoods experiencing civil unrest.
