South Sudanese President Salva Kiir Mayardit has appointed his 36-year-old son, Major General Atem Salva Kiir, as commander of the country’s elite presidential guard, known as the Tiger Division. Atem reportedly took over the command after being promoted from brigadier general to major general.
The Tiger Division is a specialised formation within the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) responsible for protecting the president and senior government figures. Atem previously commanded a special force within the National Security Service. The army has described the appointment as a formal military decision made through established command structures.
The timing is particularly significant because South Sudan is preparing for general elections scheduled for December 22, 2026. The vote would be the country’s first national election since independence in 2011, after repeated postponements linked to conflict, political instability and delays in implementing the 2018 peace agreement.
Kiir’s ruling SPLM has already nominated him as its presidential candidate for the December election. That places the president’s son in command of one of the country’s most important security formations at a politically sensitive moment.
Why The Appointment Matters
The appointment has drawn attention because it places a member of Kiir’s immediate family at the head of a military unit whose primary responsibility is protecting the presidency. It also follows other appointments involving Kiir’s children.
In August 2025, Kiir appointed his daughter Adut Salva Kiir as Senior Presidential Envoy for Special Programmes. His son Thiik Salva Kiir Mayardit was appointed deputy executive director in the Office of the President in 2024, while two of his sons were promoted and sworn in as Grade Three ambassadors in 2025.
The latest appointment therefore comes amid a broader pattern of family members occupying influential positions around the presidency, particularly as Kiir’s government faces questions over succession, security and the country’s political transition.
It also follows several major leadership changes by Kiir. In May 2026, he dismissed Army Chief General Paul Nang and restored General Santino Deng Wol, a longtime ally, to the position. It is reported that the frequent changes in senior leadership have raised concerns about Kiir strengthening his hold on power as the country approaches elections.
The Bigger Political Picture
South Sudan’s election is taking place against a fragile security backdrop. The 2018 peace agreement was intended to end the civil war between forces aligned with Kiir and opposition leader Riek Machar, but implementation has repeatedly stalled. Machar has since been suspended as vice president and faces treason-related proceedings, further complicating the political environment ahead of the vote.
While the government says the appointment of Atem follows normal military procedures, the political significance lies in the combination of three factors: the president’s son now commanding the presidential guard, Kiir seeking another term, and the country approaching its long-delayed election.
