In a new medical update from the White House, President Donald Trump, aged 79, has been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency – a benign but common circulatory condition affecting many older adults. This revelation follows growing concern when Trump was recently seen with mild swelling in his lower legs and bruising on his right hand.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt disclosed that Trump underwent thorough vascular testing, including bilateral leg ultrasounds and Doppler studies, as part of a recent checkup prompted by those visible symptoms. The results confirmed that his swollen ankles stem from vein valves failing to efficiently return blood to the heart. Importantly, no signs of deep‑vein thrombosis, arterial disease, heart failure, kidney dysfunction, or other systemic issues were detected  .

Leavitt also shed light on the bruising spotted on Trump’s hand. She attributed it to “minor soft tissue irritation” from frequent handshakes – typical of Trump’s public engagements – and his daily aspirin regimen, a staple of his cardiovascular prevention plan .

Medical experts describe chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) as a widespread vein disorder where weakened or damaged valves cause blood pooling in the legs. Symptoms often include swelling, tingling, aching limbs, and in advanced stages, varicose veins and skin changes  . The Cleveland Clinic reports it impacts roughly one in 20 adults and is particularly common among individuals over 70.

Despite its prevalence, CVI is typically manageable through non-invasive therapies. Primary interventions include compression stockings, regular walking, leg elevation, and lifestyle adjustments to boost circulation. In cases that persist or worsen, options such as prescription medications, sclerotherapy, or laser treatments may be considered.

Leavitt emphasized that Trump is not experiencing discomfort and remains in “excellent health,” with all cardiac and metabolic tests confirming his fitness. She reinforced that this condition is “benign and common in individuals over the age of 70,” highlighting that the update is intended to address speculation – not signify a serious health concern.

This announcement marks a rare moment of transparency from Trump’s team regarding his health. Observers have noted that the administration typically shies away from detailing medical matters, making this candid disclosure noteworthy.
