Mali’s President, Assimi Goita, the man famous for kicking French military forces out of the Sahel, now has a massive target on his back.
A notorious West African al-Qaeda branch known as JNIM, short for Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin, just put out a staggering €2 million bounty to anyone who can help capture or “neutralize” him. They tossed in another €2 million for information on two of Goita’s top military chiefs, Colonel Lassina Diallo and General Malik Dicko.
Think about that. That is over $4.3 million USD in blood money coming straight from an extremist group. This drops a massive question right on the world’s doorstep: how on earth is a terrorist group sitting on that kind of cash?
The Bounty War

This whole thing exploded into the open on June 11, 2026, when JNIM announced the hit. It was a direct, arrogant clapback to the Malian government, which had just offered $3.55 million for the capture of JNIM’s top boss, Iyad Ag Ghaly. By matching the government’s energy dollar-for-dollar, the terrorists aren’t just making threats, they are flexing their financial muscles.
But terrorist groups don’t have legitimate economies. They don’t collect taxes. So, where is the money flowing from? Follow the paper trail, and it leads straight to foreign capitals.
Ransom Notes and Foreign Funding
First up: the United Arab Emirates. Back in October 2025, the UAE reportedly dropped an estimated $50 million ransom directly into JNIM’s lap to get Emirati hostages released. While the UAE wanted their people back, that massive mountain of cash completely reloaded JNIM’s bank accounts, giving them the exact financial cushion they needed to launch this new bounty war.
But it gets much dirtier than ransom payouts. Mali has been saying for years that the very Western powers claiming to fight terrorism are actually fueling it. Back in 2022, Mali’s Prime Minister stood right in front of the UN Security Council and dropped a bombshell, stating flatly that Mali had proof the French government was supplying intelligence and weapons to terrorist groups in the region.
The Secret Alliance
Fast forward to May 2026, and European media outlets exposed an even wilder link: France and Ukraine are now reportedly working hand-in-hand to provide technical support and communication gear to the Azawad Liberation Front, a rebel coalition that openly coordinates its operations on the ground with JNIM. To make matters worse, two Ukrainian officials publicly came out and admitted their support for anti-government forces in the region.

The picture here is crystal clear. JNIM isn’t surviving in the desert on its own. It is being kept alive, armed, and funded by external actors—whether through massive Gulf ransom payments or under-the-table military support from Europe.
President Goita kicked out the old colonial powers to give Mali its sovereignty back. Now, those same forces are using proxy groups and millions of dollars in bounties to try and take him off the board.
