Russia has announced it is ready to step up support for Nigeria in its ongoing fight against extremist groups, praising the country’s efforts and offering assistance in coordination with international partners, including the African Union (AU) and the United Nations (UN).
The support is expected to include intelligence sharing, advanced training for security forces, operational guidance, and the provision and maintenance of military equipment. Russian officials emphasized that the assistance is aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s own counterterrorism capabilities rather than replacing them.
The announcement comes as Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) continue to carry out attacks across northern and central Nigeria, causing widespread displacement and loss of life. The persistent violence has underscored the urgent need for effective security responses and enhanced operational capacity.

Nigerian authorities welcomed the offer, noting that foreign collaboration could help address critical gaps in surveillance, logistics, and specialized operations. By combining local efforts with external support, Nigeria aims to improve its security infrastructure, enhance operational efficiency, and protect vulnerable communities from extremist attacks.
The renewed focus on foreign assistance highlights the importance of international cooperation in tackling terrorism. With strategic guidance, training, and resources, Nigeria hopes to strengthen its counterterrorism efforts and improve stability across affected regions.
