China has issued a firm warning to the United States over what it described as attempts to interfere in Nigeria’s internal affairs, following Trump’s threat of possible military action over alleged Christian persecution.

Speaking at a press briefing in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning declared full support for President Bola Tinubu’s government, emphasizing that Nigeria has the sovereign right to address its own security challenges without external pressure. Mao stated that China “firmly opposes any country using religion or human rights as an excuse to interfere in the internal affairs of others or threaten them with sanctions or force.”

The statement followed remarks by former U.S. President Donald Trump suggesting potential military intervention in Nigeria if the government fails to protect Christian communities. The comments sparked outrage in Abuja, where officials dismissed the threat as unacceptable and accused Washington of undermining Nigeria’s sovereignty.

China’s response reflects its long-standing policy of non-interference and respect for national sovereignty. The country’s show of support also highlights its deepening partnership with Nigeria, one of Africa’s largest economies and a key player in regional stability. Beijing and Abuja have strengthened cooperation in trade, energy, and infrastructure, with Chinese investments exceeding $1.3 billion in Nigeria’s mining and industrial sectors over the past two years.

In a statement from Abuja, the Nigerian government reaffirmed its commitment to religious freedom and national unity, stressing that the country’s internal matters “cannot be dictated by external powers.” President Tinubu’s administration vowed to protect all citizens regardless of faith, calling instead for dialogue and mutual respect in international relations.

The latest diplomatic exchange underscores Nigeria’s growing importance on the global stage, as major powers seek to strengthen ties with the West African nation amid rising tensions over global influence and resource security.
