South African authorities have stopped and arrested 1,174 undocumented migrants who were trying to enter the country illegally through the Limpopo border. Most of those intercepted were from Zimbabwe, and the incident is being described as unusually large for this time of the year.
The operation was carried out by the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), which is deployed along the border to prevent illegal crossings. Soldiers detected the group using unofficial routes and moved in to stop them before they could enter South African territory.
Officials said the size of the group was unexpected, especially during the festive season, making the operation more challenging than usual. All those intercepted were detained and later handed over to immigration authorities for further processing in accordance with the law.
The situation became tense during the arrests, with some individuals turning aggressive. One SANDF soldier was stabbed during the confrontation. The soldier received medical treatment and is reported to be in stable condition.
Authorities say the incident shows the continued pressure on South Africa’s northern border, particularly along the Limpopo route, which is often used for illegal crossings. Security patrols are expected to remain active as the government works to strengthen border control and manage irregular migration.
