Former world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has been injured after being involved in a fatal road accident in southwestern Nigeria that claimed the lives of two people. The crash occurred on Monday along the Lagos Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State, one of the country’s busiest highways, according to local authorities and media reports.
Joshua was travelling as a passenger in a Lexus SUV when the vehicle collided with a stationary truck on the roadside. Initial findings from Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps indicate that the SUV may have been travelling at speed before losing control, possibly during an overtaking manoeuvre, leading to the devastating impact.
The British Nigerian boxer sustained minor injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention. Officials confirmed that he was conscious and stable following the crash. Video footage circulating on social media showed Joshua being assisted from the damaged vehicle by bystanders, appearing shaken but able to stand and walk on his own.
Tragically, two occupants of the vehicle died at the scene. Their identities have not yet been formally released as authorities continue to notify family members. Other passengers were reported to have escaped serious injury. Police and emergency services responded swiftly, cordoning off the area as investigations began into the exact cause of the accident.
The incident comes just days after Joshua’s widely publicised return to the ring, where he secured a victory over Jake Paul in Miami, reigniting global interest in his boxing career. Joshua had travelled to Nigeria for personal engagements and to reconnect with his roots, having spent part of his early life in the country.
