China has accused the United States of attempting to undermine improving relations between China and India, saying Washington is distorting China’s defence policy in an effort to drive a wedge between the two Asian powers.

Speaking at a regular foreign ministry briefing, a Chinese spokesperson said China and India view their relationship from a long-term and strategic perspective and have the ability to manage differences through direct dialogue. China rejected claims in a recent U.S. defence assessment that it was easing tensions with India in order to counter India’s growing partnership with the United States.

China said recent progress in bilateral ties, including steps taken to reduce tensions along the disputed Himalayan border, was achieved through sustained communication between Chinese and Indian military and diplomatic officials. The spokesperson stressed that the border issue is a bilateral matter and should not be politicised or internationalised by third parties.

China also warned that external interference could undermine regional stability and damage trust between China and India. According to the spokesperson, attempts by outside powers to frame China-India engagement through the lens of great-power rivalry are misleading and unhelpful.
