Ethiopia has taken a major step toward transforming its aviation sector after securing $500 million in funding from the African Development Bank (AfDB) for the construction of Africa’s largest airport.

The new mega facility, to be built in Bishoftu, about 39 kilometers southeast of Addis Ababa, is expected to position Ethiopia as a continental aviation hub and boost the country’s economic growth. Once complete, the airport will have the capacity to handle up to 100 million passengers annually surpassing current traffic at Bole International Airport, the nation’s main gateway.

The project will be developed under Ethiopian Airlines Group, Africa’s most profitable and fastest-growing airline, which has been expanding aggressively despite global economic challenges. The state of the art airport will feature multiple runways, a vast cargo terminal, and modern passenger amenities, making it a key driver of tourism, trade, and investment.

AfDB President Dr. Akinwumi Adesina hailed the financing as a strategic investment in Africa’s transport infrastructure, noting that improved connectivity would strengthen regional integration and global competitiveness. Ethiopian officials say the project aligns with the country’s 10 year development plan and its ambition to become a top aviation hub, rivaling major global airports.

The funding marks one of AfDB’s largest commitments in Ethiopia’s transport sector, underscoring confidence in the country’s long-term economic prospects. With this landmark project, Ethiopia aims to soar to new heights.
