U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a warning to Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying there will be “very severe consequences” if Moscow continues its war in Ukraine after their upcoming summit in Alaska. Speaking in Washington, Trump declined to specify whether those consequences would involve sanctions, tariffs, or other measures, saying, “I don’t have to say.”
The high-stakes meeting is set for August 15 at Joint Base Elmendorf–Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska. Ahead of the talks, Trump held a virtual conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and key European leaders, including Germany’s Friedrich Merz, France’s Emmanuel Macron, and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

The leaders emphasized that any negotiations must include Kyiv and safeguard Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
Zelenskyy warned that Putin’s overtures toward peace are a bluff, urging the West to maintain a united front. European leaders reiterated their stance that no territorial concessions should be made in any settlement.

Trump described the Alaska summit as a “feel-out” meeting rather than a formal negotiation. He indicated that if Putin shows genuine willingness to end the war, a follow-up meeting involving Trump, Putin, and Zelenskyy could be arranged. However, he stressed that no further talks would take place if the initial meeting fails to produce progress.

Analysts suggest Trump’s warning could foreshadow renewed economic pressure on Russia, including secondary sanctions targeting its energy exports.
The summit is being closely watched as a potential turning point in the conflict, now in its fourth year, with global powers waiting to see whether diplomacy can halt the fighting or whether tensions will escalate further.
