South Korea and Ghana have agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation in climate action, digital technology and maritime security following high-level talks aimed at deepening strategic ties between the two nations.

The agreement was reached during a meeting between Lee Jae‑myung and John Dramani Mahama, where both leaders pledged to expand collaboration across key sectors considered critical to economic growth, environmental protection and regional security. The talks highlighted a shared interest in building stronger partnerships between Asia and Africa as global challenges increasingly demand coordinated international responses.

During the meeting, the two governments signed several memorandums of understanding covering climate change cooperation, maritime safety and security, and digital technology development. The agreements are expected to create a framework for joint initiatives that could include technology transfer, capacity building and investment partnerships designed to accelerate innovation and sustainable development.

Climate cooperation will focus on supporting commitments under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and exploring mechanisms such as international carbon markets under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement on climate change. Through these mechanisms, the two countries aim to collaborate on emissions-reduction projects, renewable energy development and climate-resilience programs.

Maritime security was another major focus of the discussions, particularly in efforts to improve safety in the Gulf of Guinea, a vital shipping corridor that has experienced incidents of piracy and maritime crime in recent years. Cooperation between the two countries is expected to involve training programs, information sharing and joint initiatives aimed at strengthening surveillance and maritime law enforcement capabilities.

Technology and digital innovation also formed a central pillar of the partnership. Both countries signaled plans to expand collaboration in areas such as artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure and science education. The cooperation is expected to support skills development among young professionals and strengthen technological capacity in Ghana while opening new opportunities for South Korean companies seeking partnerships in Africa.

The discussions also underscored Ghana’s growing role as a strategic economic hub on the continent. As host of the secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area, Ghana is increasingly viewed as a gateway for international investors looking to access the rapidly expanding African market.

By combining Ghana’s natural resources, strategic geographic position and regional trade influence with South Korea’s advanced technological expertise, both countries signaled their intention to build a partnership that supports innovation, strengthens maritime security and contributes to global climate action. Leaders from both nations expressed confidence that the expanded cooperation would open new opportunities for economic growth and long-term development while reinforcing ties between Africa and Asia.
