Somalia and Turkey are preparing to embark on a historic offshore oil and gas drilling venture in 2026, marking the first time Turkey will conduct deepwater exploration beyond its borders. The project, which is set to begin early next year, is expected to unlock significant hydrocarbon potential off Somalia’s coast and strengthen strategic economic and diplomatic ties between the two nations.

According to Somali and Turkish officials, the Turkish drillship cagri Bey will be deployed to Somali waters as early as February 2026. The vessel will operate in blocks that have been thoroughly surveyed in recent years, following extensive seismic mapping conducted by Turkish research vessels. The surveys indicated promising hydrocarbon prospects, giving both governments confidence to move forward with the deepwater drilling operation.

Somalia views the project as a transformative step toward economic growth and energy independence. Officials believe the drilling could create jobs, generate revenue, and help fund critical public services, while establishing Somalia as a credible player in the global energy market.

For Turkey, the initiative represents a major expansion of its energy strategy, diversifying exploration efforts beyond its regional waters and strengthening its footprint in Africa’s Indian Ocean basin.

Deepwater drilling in Somalia’s maritime exclusive economic zone (EEZ) presents both opportunities and challenges. Technical complexity, including operations at depths of up to 3,000 meters, will require advanced equipment and experienced personnel. Security concerns, such as piracy and regional instability, also remain a priority, with Turkish naval forces providing protection during the operation.

The collaboration between Somalia and Turkey builds on years of growing bilateral ties. In addition to offshore exploration, the two countries have signed agreements for onshore hydrocarbon exploration, while Turkey has also supported Somalia through military training, infrastructure development, and humanitarian assistance. The drilling project is being described as a “historic moment” by Somali officials, signaling both economic potential and strengthened international partnerships.

As Somalia prepares to enter the energy sector in a new era, the partnership with Turkey could serve as a model for leveraging international expertise to develop untapped natural resources. With the first drillship scheduled for deployment in early 2026, the coming months will be critical for logistical preparation, technical readiness, and security planning, ensuring the project launches successfully and safely.

This historic venture could redefine Somalia’s energy landscape and cement Turkey’s role as a key strategic partner, offering economic benefits and a renewed sense of regional influence in East Africa.
