The fallout from Egypt’s dramatic FIFA World Cup exit is far from over. The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has formally lodged a complaint with FIFA, demanding an investigation into French referee François Letexier and his entire officiating team following the Pharaohs’ controversial 3-2 defeat to defending champions Argentina in the Round of 16.
The complaint marks a major escalation in one of the tournament’s biggest refereeing controversies, with Egyptian football authorities insisting that a series of questionable decisions fundamentally changed the outcome of a match they believed they had under control.
Egypt had stunned Argentina by racing into a two-goal lead and appeared on course for one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history. However, the match turned dramatically after a number of contentious VAR interventions and non-interventions, allowing Argentina to mount a remarkable comeback and secure a 3-2 victory.
At the heart of Egypt’s complaint is the decision to disallow what would have been a crucial second-half goal by forward Mostafa Ziko. Following a lengthy VAR review, officials ruled that midfielder Marwan Attia had fouled Argentina defender Lisandro Martínez during the build-up, wiping out a goal that would have significantly strengthened Egypt’s advantage. The decision immediately sparked fierce protests from Egyptian players and coaching staff.
Egyptian officials also questioned why another critical moment received no similar review. Moments before Argentina scored the winning goal in stoppage time, Egypt appealed for a penalty after captain Mohamed Salah went down inside the box. Despite repeated protests from the Egyptian bench, referee Letexier allowed play to continue, and Argentina launched the counterattack that ended with Enzo Fernández scoring the decisive goal.
In its official statement, the EFA said it “cannot remain silent” over what it described as inconsistent officiating and the improper use of the Video Assistant Referee system. Association president Hany Abo Rida has called on FIFA not only to investigate the referee and the VAR officials but also to remove the entire officiating crew from the remainder of the tournament.
The controversy has spread well beyond Egypt. Several former players, analysts and television pundits have publicly questioned the consistency of the refereeing decisions, particularly the contrast between the detailed review that overturned Egypt’s goal and the refusal to review Egypt’s late penalty appeal.
Adding to the pressure, Egyptian head coach Hossam Hassan accused the officials of making serious mistakes after the match, while forward Mostafa Ziko also criticized the refereeing, insisting key decisions unfairly favoured Argentina. The controversy quickly exploded across social media, with referee Letexier reportedly restricting comments on his Instagram account after receiving intense online criticism.
For Egypt, the dispute goes beyond a single defeat. The federation argues that transparent and consistent officiating is essential to protecting the integrity of football’s biggest tournament, regardless of the teams involved.
FIFA has acknowledged receipt of the complaint but had not publicly commented on the substance of Egypt’s allegations at the time of publication. The world governing body is expected to review the referee’s performance as part of its standard post-match assessment process, although it remains unclear whether any disciplinary action will follow.
