Malian authorities have arrested dozens of soldiers over an alleged coup plot against the ruling junta, according to security and political sources. The arrests, reportedly carried out in the capital Bamako and other military installations, targeted officers suspected of planning to overthrow the transitional government led by Colonel Assimi Goïta.

Sources familiar with the matter said the detained soldiers are accused of conspiring to destabilize the junta through coordinated actions within the armed forces. While the specific details of the alleged plot remain unclear, it is understood that intelligence services had been monitoring the group for weeks before making the arrests.

Mali’s transitional authorities have yet to release an official statement on the incident, but analysts say the development underscores the deep political and security tensions in the country. The junta came to power in 2021 following two successive military takeovers and has faced growing criticism over delayed elections and worsening insecurity linked to jihadist violence.

This latest alleged coup attempt highlights the fragile nature of Mali’s political landscape, where distrust within the armed forces and dissatisfaction among the public remain high. International partners are likely to watch closely for the junta’s next moves, as calls for stability and a clear roadmap to civilian rule continue to mount.

If confirmed, the arrests mark one of the largest internal crackdowns since the junta seized power, raising fresh questions about unity within the military ranks and the future direction of Mali’s troubled transition.
