HAVANA, CUBA- During the XIX meeting of the intergovernmental commission for cooperation between the two nations in Moscow, Cuba showed interest in Russian fertilizers, hydrocarbons, and wheat.
The Russian Ministry of Economic Development said to the TASS agency, “the Cuban side expressed its interest in stable supplies to the Island of fertilizers, hydrocarbons and Russian wheat.”
As part of the negotiations, the parties also discussed the current state and prospects of bilateral trade and economic relations.
Several topics were addressed, including humanitarian, scientific, and educational cooperation, as well as industrial and energy projects, although no specific information was provided.
A statement concluded that the government of the Russian Federation and the government of the Republic of Cuba signed an agreement on cooperation in higher education to deepen humanitarian ties.
The meeting of the Russian-Cuban 🇨🇺 intergovernmental commission takes place on the eve of the arrival in Moscow of the Cuban president, Miguel Díaz-Canel, who will participate in the inauguration of a monument to Fidel Castro early next week along with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin.
Contacts and statements between the two countries have intensified in recent weeks. Sergey Riabkov, the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister, and Ricardo Cabrisas, the Cuban Deputy Prime Minister, addressed on Thursday the “unacceptable” unilateral sanctions against their respective countries.
In addition, Riabkov confirmed that he “unconditionally supported Cuba’s efforts to lift the illegal US embargo on the island.”
On the occasion of the Havana International Fair a day ago, Boris Titov, the Russian presidential commissioner for workers’ rights, said both nations were discussing the possibility of carrying out transactions in rubles and cryptocurrencies to avoid international sanctions and facilitate “mutual payments.”
The Russian president’s spokesman, Dmitri Peskov, confirmed Miguel Diaz-Canel’s visit to Moscow as “a very important visit”: “Cuba is a very important partner for us. We have a lot to talk about.”
