The United States has suspended all assistance to Somalia’s federal government following claims that food aid intended for vulnerable populations was illegally seized. The move, announced by the U.S. State Department, underscores Washington’s “zero-tolerance” policy toward the diversion or misuse of life-saving humanitarian aid.
According to U.S. officials, Somali authorities allegedly destroyed a U.S.-funded World Food Programme (WFP) warehouse at Mogadishu port, seizing approximately 76 metric tons of food meant for malnourished children and women. The State Department emphasized that assistance could only resume once Somalia demonstrates accountability and takes corrective measures to prevent future incidents.
Somali authorities have strongly denied the allegations, insisting that the food aid remains under WFP control. Officials clarified that any demolition at the port was part of routine infrastructure work, not an effort to divert humanitarian supplies. Somalia has pledged to review the matter through technical committees in coordination with international partners.
The World Food Programme confirmed that a warehouse at Mogadishu port, previously containing specialized nutritious foods, was demolished by port authorities. While much of the aid was later retrieved, the incident has raised serious concerns about the protection and management of humanitarian resources in the country.
Somalia, one of the world’s most food-insecure nations, relies heavily on international assistance to support millions affected by conflict, drought, and displacement. The suspension of U.S. aid, one of the largest sources of funding for Somali humanitarian programs, could exacerbate the already critical situation for vulnerable communities.
This development also signals a tense moment in U.S.-Somalia relations.
