Relations between the Nigeria, and the United States have taken a tense turn after President Donald Trump warned that the U.S. could use military force if Nigeria fails to stop what he called the “mass killing of Christians.”

Trump, speaking at the White House, accused Nigerian authorities of neglecting Christian communities and said his government would suspend all forms of aid to Nigeria if the attacks continue. He added that the Department of Defense had been instructed to prepare “possible options” should the violence persist.

The statement drew an immediate and firm reaction from Nigeria’s government. Officials dismissed Trump’s remarks as inaccurate and said the country’s security challenges were being misrepresented.

Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the violence across several regions is driven by terrorism, organized crime, and local disputes, not a campaign against Christians. The ministry reaffirmed that the government is committed to protecting all citizens, regardless of faith or ethnicity.

The controversy follows renewed attacks in Nigeria’s Middle Belt and northern regions, where armed groups have carried out deadly raids on villages. The Nigerian military has launched several operations in affected states, including Kaduna, Plateau, and Benue, in an effort to restore order. Officials say dozens of suspects have been arrested in recent weeks.

In recent months, the U.S. government has expressed concern over the rising insecurity in Nigeria and urged the authorities to ensure accountability for perpetrators of violence. American officials have also called for greater protection of religious freedoms and the rule of law.

Nigeria remains one of the United States’ closest partners in Africa, with cooperation in counterterrorism, energy, and trade. However, the latest dispute threatens to strain that relationship at a time when both countries are seeking stronger economic and security ties.

Trump’s remarks have also drawn attention across Africa, with several regional leaders warning that foreign military involvement in Nigeria could destabilize the wider region. The African Union has yet to respond officially, but diplomatic sources say quiet consultations are already underway to prevent further escalation.
