Donald Trump has threatened to cut off trade with Spain after Madrid declined to allow the United States military to use joint bases on Spanish territory for operations linked to strikes on Iran, sharply escalating tensions between the NATO allies.
Trump criticised Spain’s decision following its refusal to grant access to key installations in southern Spain, including the naval base at Rota and the air base at Moron, which operate under longstanding bilateral defence arrangements. He warned that Washington could halt trade dealings with Spain, signalling that economic measures were being considered in response to what he described as a lack of cooperation.
Spain has maintained that any use of its territory for military operations must comply with existing agreements and international law. Madrid reaffirmed that actions launched from its soil must align with the framework of the United Nations Charter and be consistent with Spain’s legal commitments. The country has stated that it did not authorise the use of its bases for offensive strikes related to Iran.
The dispute unfolds against a backdrop of heightened tensions in the Middle East, where U.S. military action has targeted Iranian-linked positions. Spain’s stance reflects its position on limiting direct involvement in operations that could broaden the conflict, while continuing to participate in collective defence through the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
Any move to suspend trade would carry significant implications, as Spain is part of the European Union, which negotiates trade policy on behalf of its member states. The confrontation therefore risks widening beyond bilateral ties, potentially affecting broader transatlantic relations.
Trade between the United States and Spain spans key sectors including energy, agriculture, defence technology and manufacturing, making any disruption potentially costly for businesses on both sides. A full suspension of trade would mark an unprecedented step in modern U.S.- Spain relations and could trigger retaliatory measures within the European bloc.
The disagreement also adds strain to alliance dynamics at a time when unity within NATO is being closely watched amid global security challenges. While Spain continues to host U.S. military personnel and assets under existing agreements, the refusal to permit the use of its bases for the Iran-linked strikes showcases differing approaches among allies on how to respond to escalating tensions in the Middle East.
