RWANDAN PRESIDENT TO VIE AGAIN IN 2024 ELECTION

PaulĀ Kagame, Rwanda’s de facto president since the end of the genocide in 1994, has said he will run for office once more in the 2024 election.

When asked if he will run for office again,Ā KagameĀ responded, “I think about running for another 20 years. I don’t have an issue with it, he said in an interview with journalists.

ā€œElections are about people choosing,ā€ he added.

By amending the constitution in 2015,Ā KagameĀ was able to extend his rule until 2034.

With an official 99 percent of the vote, the 64-year-old candidate easily won the 2017 presidential election.

He was only 36 years old when his Patriotic Front party drove Hutu extremists responsible for the genocide that killed almost 800,000 mostly Tutsi people between April and July 1994 from power.

At a Commonwealth conference held in Kigali at the end of June,Ā KagameĀ vehemently defended Rwanda’s record on political and human rights.
