The British political party Reform UK has proposed denying visas to citizens of countries that demand reparations from the United Kingdom over its historical role in the transatlantic slave trade. The proposal forms part of the party’s immigration policy and would apply to countries that formally pursue compensation claims against Britain.

The policy was announced by Reform UK figures including party leader Nigel Farage and the party’s home affairs spokesperson Zia Yusuf. According to the proposal, the United Kingdom would refuse visas to nationals of countries whose governments actively demand financial reparations for slavery.

The proposal targets nations in Africa and the Caribbean that have raised the issue of reparatory justice linked to the transatlantic slave trade. Several countries, including Ghana and Jamaica, have been among those advocating for compensation or formal discussions on reparations from former colonial powers

Calls for reparations have gained global attention in recent years through initiatives led by the Caribbean Community and the African Union. These organizations have pushed for international dialogue on the long-term economic and social consequences of slavery and colonial exploitation.

The issue has also been raised at the United Nations, where member states have debated the historical legacy of the transatlantic slave trade. In recent discussions, the trade was described as one of the gravest crimes against humanity, and the topic of reparatory justice has been increasingly discussed within global diplomatic forums.

The visa restriction proposal remains a political position and has not been adopted as government policy in the United Kingdom. Its implementation would depend on Reform UK winning power in a future national election and introducing the policy through government legislation.
