Two Kenyan human rights activists, Bob Njagi and Nicholas Oyoo, have gone missing in Uganda under circumstances that rights groups describe as an abduction. Their disappearance has raised alarm across the region and placed renewed focus on the shrinking civic space in East Africa.
Eyewitnesses say the incident occurred at a petrol station in Kireka, Kampala. The activists were reportedly stopped under the pretext of a car problem. Moments later, armed men appeared, some dressed in police uniforms while others were in plain clothes. The men forced Njagi and Oyoo into a van which drove away quickly. Their phones were switched off immediately and no official information has since been shared about where they are or what condition they are in.

Njagi and Oyoo had traveled to Uganda to support opposition leader Bobi Wine during his campaign activities. Following their disappearance, Amnesty International Kenya, the Law Society of Kenya and VOCAL Africa issued a public letter demanding that the Ugandan government disclose their whereabouts and guarantee their safety.
Bobi Wine strongly condemned the disappearance and accused the Ugandan authorities of lawlessness. He demanded that the two Kenyans be released without any conditions.

Observers believe the case fits into a wider pattern of repression across the region. In recent years activists and opposition voices have been targeted, detained or moved across national borders in ways that suggest a coordinated effort to silence dissent. Human rights defenders argue that such actions weaken democracy and increase tensions among neighboring states.
For now the fate of Bob Njagi and Nicholas Oyoo remains uncertain. Their disappearance has already united rights groups and political voices who insist that governments must protect civic freedoms and ensure accountability for such violations.
