Ghana will introduce visa-free travel for all African nationals beginning May 25, 2026, marking a major step toward improving mobility across the continent. The new travel policy will take effect on Africa Day, an annual celebration of African unity and solidarity, and is expected to significantly reduce barriers that have historically limited movement between African countries.

The initiative was announced by President John Dramani Mahama and will allow African travelers to obtain electronic visas (e-visas) free of charge before entering Ghana. Under the system, visitors will complete an online application and receive approval digitally, eliminating the traditional visa fees that many African travelers often face when visiting other countries on the continent.

The introduction of a free e-visa system is expected to make travel to Ghana faster and more accessible. African visitors will no longer be required to pay for entry permits, while the digital process will simplify immigration procedures and reduce paperwork. Despite the removal of visa fees, the system will still include security and identity verification checks to ensure that travelers meet entry requirements before arrival.

The policy is also expected to boost tourism and business travel within Africa. Easier access to Ghana could encourage more African entrepreneurs, investors, students, and tourists to travel across borders for trade, conferences, education, and cultural exchanges. Increased mobility is widely viewed as an important driver of economic growth, particularly as African countries work to strengthen intra-continental trade and cooperation.

Visa restrictions have long been identified as one of the key obstacles to travel within Africa. Many African passport holders still require visas to visit a large number of other African countries, making regional movement more complicated compared to travel within other regions of the world. Initiatives that simplify travel are therefore seen as important steps toward improving connectivity across the continent.

Ghana’s decision aligns with broader integration efforts promoted by the African Union, which has been advocating for easier movement of people as part of its long-term development goals. The policy also supports wider economic integration initiatives, including increased trade and cooperation between African economies.

With the policy scheduled to take effect in May 2026, Ghana will join a small group of African countries that allow visa-free or simplified entry for all African passport holders. The move reinforces Ghana’s longstanding commitment to Pan-African ideals and its role in promoting stronger connections between African nations through travel, commerce, and cultural exchange.
