The United Nations has expressed concern over rising tensions in Ethiopia’s northern Tigray region, cautioning that recent developments could undermine the fragile peace established after the 2022 cessation of hostilities agreement. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urged all parties to exercise restraint and resolve disputes through dialogue to prevent a relapse into conflict.

Tigray is still recovering from a devastating two-year war that began in late 2020 and ended with the signing of the Permanent Cessation of Hostilities Agreement in Pretoria in November 2022. While the deal brought an end to large-scale fighting between federal forces and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), several political, security and territorial issues remain unresolved, leaving the region vulnerable to renewed instability.

Recent reports of localized clashes in western Tigray, particularly in contested areas, have heightened international concern. The incidents have raised fears that unresolved grievances between regional actors and federal authorities could escalate if not addressed promptly. In response to the deteriorating security situation, some foreign governments have updated travel advisories, warning their citizens against travel to the region.

The impact of the renewed tensions is already being felt on the ground. Ethiopian Airlines has suspended flights to and from Tigray, citing security considerations. The move has disrupted travel and commerce and highlights the delicate state of stability in the region.

The African Union, which played a central role in mediating the 2022 peace agreement, has joined the UN in calling for calm and full adherence to the terms of the accord. AU officials have emphasized the importance of confidence-building measures and continued political engagement to preserve the gains made since the end of the war.

Humanitarian conditions remain fragile, with many communities still dependent on aid following years of conflict, displacement and economic disruption. The United Nations has stressed that any renewed fighting would place civilians at significant risk and further complicate recovery efforts.
