U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to sue the BBC for $1 billion, accusing the broadcaster of defamation over an edited version of his January 6, 2021, speech shown in a Panorama documentary.

The programme, titled Trump: A Second Chance?, allegedly combined two separate parts of his address, making it appear that he urged supporters to “fight” as they headed toward the Capitol.

Trump’s legal team said the edit was “misleading and damaging,” claiming it falsely portrayed him as calling for violence. They have demanded a full retraction, a public apology, and financial compensation for the harm caused to his reputation. The letter also directed the BBC to preserve all video footage and production communications linked to the broadcast.

The BBC has admitted the edit was an “error of judgment.” It has since withdrawn the episode, issued an apology, and launched an internal review of its editorial standards.

The fallout has led to the resignation of Director-General Tim Davie and News Chief Deborah Turness, both stepping down amid growing pressure over the handling of the incident.

The dispute has intensified discussions about media responsibility and the importance of context in political reporting. The BBC, known globally for its editorial independence, now faces the task of rebuilding public confidence and ensuring accuracy in future productions. For President Trump, the case underscores his determination to challenge what he considers false portrayals and to defend his record against misrepresentation.
